Rooks Steps Up in Key Moment for Blue Jays
Three years back, Nathan Rooks was on the verge of leaving baseball behind.
Selected in the seventh round by the Cleveland Guardians in 2015, Rooks spent a lot of time shuffle between the Guardians and the Tampa Bay Rays’ minor leagues, just waiting for a shot at the majors. As the 2022 season wrapped up, he found himself ready to reconsider his path, thinking perhaps it was time to focus on family instead.
“It’s been on my mind for a while. I hadn’t debuted yet in the MLB, and during my first year as a free agent, I told my wife, ‘Let’s give it one more go and see how it plays out. Then maybe it’s time to just be a dad,’” Rooks reminisced. It was a pivotal moment when he learned he made the 40-man roster. That felt like his golden ticket.
Fast forward to Thursday night, and there he was at Yankee Stadium, stepping into the batter’s box for what might be one of the most crucial at-bats of his life.
Having secured his spot, Rooks played in 29 games with the Blue Jays in the 2023 season. Even with a torn ligament in his left thumb sidelining him for a stretch in 2024, he remained firmly with the team as a fourth outfielder and a left-handed pinch hitter.
He kicked off the ALDS by going 2-for-5 with a two-run double in Game 1 against the Yankees and returned to the starting lineup for Game 4.
In the seventh inning, with the Blue Jays holding a slim 2-1 lead, Rooks stood at the plate with two outs and two runners on base. Although he hadn’t found success against the Yankees’ starter earlier in the game, the pressure was mounting for New York. They switched to Devin Williams, hoping for a breakthrough against Rooks.
This was a critical juncture. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. waiting on deck, the Yankees needed to escape this inning to keep their hopes alive. Here they were, facing Rooks—a player who’d fought hard to get back into the game.
Seizing the moment, Rooks connected with the first fastball he saw. He hit it over Anthony Volpe’s head for a single, bringing in Ernie Clement and Andres Jimenez, extending Toronto’s lead to 4-1.
From that point, the Blue Jays didn’t look back, ultimately winning 5-1 and securing their spot in the ALCS. The path to the American League World Series is now through Toronto.
After the game, Rooks became a focal point of discussion, particularly highlighted by coach John Schneider. “I couldn’t be happier for Nathan Rooks—just look at the series he’s had and the season he’s been through,” Schneider expressed.
When asked about the team’s ability to make the right contact throughout the season, Schneider again pointed to Rooks as a standout example.
“Nathan Rooks facing Devin Williams, knowing Williams is likely to throw a fastball since Vlad is on deck, and he stepped up, that’s just fearless,” Schneider noted. “The players come in with a plan, and we aim to utilize everyone’s strengths.”
During the post-game celebration, Rooks was mentioned again, though in a more lighthearted context.
“It takes everyone—Nathan Rooks, Myles Straw, all the moms—every day,” Schneider joked.
Before the game, Rooks spoke to the media about realizing he could be an everyday player.
His response reflected his journey in baseball, filled with various moments. “Oh, I don’t know. It’s tough to pinpoint just one. I mean, all those RBIs, sack bunts, hit-and-runs… they all count,” he remarked.
Now, the journey that took him from the minor leagues to Yankee Stadium sets off toward its next chapter: the ALCS.
A chance at the World Series awaits.
He is incredibly grateful; this moment feels like the biggest turning point yet.
