Surveillance Video of Idaho Student’s Murder Released

Security footage from a neighborhood highlights Brian Koberger’s movements before and after the murder of four University of Idaho students. The video reveals his car circling the area right before he parked near the victims’ home, with sounds of a struggle and a dog barking audible, followed by Koberger speeding away from the scene.

The white sedan, identified as Koberger’s Hyundai Elantra, was frequently seen in the vicinity before the incident. After the attack, he reportedly turned off his mobile phone to conceal his whereabouts and took a detour on his way home.

Previously released snippets of this video had been shared with Dateline. A public records request granted access to about an hour of footage recorded at 1112 King Road once the gag order was lifted.

Critical Questions Remain Unanswered

This video supports earlier claims in a probable cause affidavit that came out post-arrest, including a neighbor’s camera capturing disturbances including a barking dog followed by a struggle.

Koberger admitted to murdering Madison Morgen (21), Kaylee Gonsalves (21), Zana Kernodle (20), and Ethan Chapin (20), who were mostly asleep when he entered their home in the early hours of November 13, 2022, armed with a Carver knife.

While the sounds of the struggle are hard to distinguish in the video, the dog’s barking clearly lasts for several minutes.

It’s worth noting that Koberger, who previously studied criminology, pleaded guilty in July, just weeks ahead of the impending trial, where he could have faced the death penalty if found guilty by a jury.

Instead, he has been sentenced to four consecutive life terms without the chance for parole, along with an additional ten-year term. Notably, he waived his right to appeal or seek reductions in his sentence.
