A Democratic representative from North Carolina has been arrested on allegations of statutory rape involving a teenage girl.
U.S. Rep. Cecil Brockman, who serves Guilford County, faces multiple charges, including two counts of indecency with a child and two counts of statutory rape of a minor aged 13 to 15, according to reports from a local news outlet.
The arrest warrant reportedly states that Brockman “unlawfully, intentionally, and with a felonious commission committed or attempted to commit a lewd and lascivious act” against the 15-year-old victim last August.
At the time of his arrest, he was denied bail, and legal documents indicate that he went to the hospital to find the victim, allegedly using his position as a representative to contact her.
Brockman is currently being held in the Guilford County Jail and is set to appear in court later today.
The North Carolina Democratic Party issued a statement about the situation, claiming that the serious nature of the charges makes it unfeasible for Brockman to effectively represent his constituents. They are calling for his immediate resignation.
In a notable turn, Brockman had founded a youth academic center earlier this year, established in his name.
Whereas, Robert Lives, the Democratic Leader in the North Carolina House of Representatives, addressed the situation: “As we learn more about the allegations against Congressman Brockman, it’s evident that he cannot continue to serve in the House. He must resign without delay.”
House Speaker Destin Hall also spoke out, stressing the shocking seriousness of the allegations. He emphasized the need for Brockman to resign swiftly to avoid any disruption to the work of the House.
If Brockman chooses to resign, the process is in place for the Guilford County Democratic Party Executive Committee to select a replacement. Only members residing in his district would have a vote in the matter.
