Cleveland Browns’ Quarterback Situation: Sanders in Limbo

Before Week 5, Dillon Gabriel was named the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback, leaving Shedeur Sanders as the third-string option while Joe Flacco served as the backup. It’s unclear, however, if Sanders will see any promotion to backup now that Flacco has joined the Cincinnati Bengals.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski hasn’t committed to Sanders as the backup, recently promoting Bailey Zappe to the practice squad. This decision received criticism from ESPN analyst Ryan Clark, who expressed his views quite passionately.

Clark stated, “If Sanders isn’t named the backup quarterback, then it’s really time for the Browns to part ways with him. If they’re not planning to develop him as a future starter, there’s just too much confusion surrounding his role.” This comment came during Thursday’s edition of “First Take.”

Flacco is expected to start for the Bengals this Sunday due to Jake Browning missing all three starts in light of Joe Burrow’s injury. On this matter, Stefanski noted, “We were surprised by the trade for Joe. It happened very rapidly and not at all in the way we anticipated.” He emphasized the importance of considering players’ development while also keeping the team’s goals in mind, reflecting on past decisions regarding Gabriel.

Coach Stefanski referred to Zappe as a “senior player” given his experience as a starter with the New England Patriots. He also mentioned that Deshaun Watson has demonstrated leadership qualities, despite being sidelined this season.

Last week, Gabriel, who was drafted earlier than Sanders, made his first NFL start against the Minnesota Vikings in London. Although Gabriel threw for two touchdowns, the Browns ultimately lost 21-17, plunging their record to 1-4.

Sanders, when asked about his position as third-string, chose not to voice frustration openly, opting instead for nonverbal cues. However, he did express happiness for Flacco regarding his new opportunity.
