Senate Republican criticizes Greene's shutdown remarks: 'Completely unjust'

Disagreement Among GOP Over Government Shutdown

Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-Va.) has criticized Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for departing from party leadership, particularly in her comments regarding the ongoing government shutdown.

During an interview on CNN, Capito expressed her understanding of frustrations surrounding the situation but deemed it unfair that Republicans are not engaging in negotiations or discussions among themselves. She was reflecting on her House colleagues, sharing her concerns about this disconnect.

Greene had previously expressed her dissatisfaction with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) over the decision to cancel a House vote. This cancellation came amidst discontent from Democrats regarding the failure to extend insurance premium subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

In a CNN interview, Greene emphasized that millions of Americans could face substantial increases in their health insurance premiums if these subsidies are not extended, which are set to expire at the year’s end. She urged lawmakers to act swiftly, pointing out that if families are forced to choose between covering rent or their insurance due to skyrocketing costs, it would lead to significant hardship for many.

Capito, however, maintained that the issue of healthcare subsidies could be addressed later and encouraged Senate Democrats to back Republicans’ proposed short-term funding package. She described it as a straightforward amendment that would allow the government to reopen for seven weeks without complications. In her view, this shouldn’t be a divisive issue among parties.

Capito also noted her consistent support for similar bills in the past, reflecting her commitment to bipartisan solutions. Meanwhile, Johnson backed Capito’s stance and stated that Greene lacks a comprehensive understanding of the committee addressing ACA extensions, implying that she may not be fully informed on the matter.

Despite the internal rifts in the GOP, Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have steadfastly resisted the escalating Democratic calls for change, even when polls indicate a broader dissatisfaction among the public regarding the government shutdown.
