John Calipari’s Surprising Move to Arkansas

In an unexpected twist, Arkansas coach John Calipari made headlines in April 2024 when he decided to leave Kentucky for the Razorbacks. It seems there may have been a hint of divine influence in his choice to move south.

Speaking to Outkick host Dan Dakich, Calipari shared an intriguing moment from his decision-making process. “Father Joe, a priest, was with me in Las Vegas,” he recounted, referring to a friend’s bachelor party. “He suggested, ‘Take a walk. An hour. You’re the Kentucky coach. Come back, and you’ll be the Arkansas coach.’

Sounds straightforward, right?

Calipari expressed that he felt more exhilarated upon returning than when he first walked as a Wildcat. “About 15 minutes after we returned, he started whistling and skipping,” Calipari recalled. “You know what? I’m doing this. Father Joe from Philadelphia encouraged me. He really did!”

As for his contract, reports indicate that Calipari signed on for five years with Arkansas. During his interview, Dakich playfully asked why Italians like Calipari often have a priest handy when making significant life choices.

Calipari joked, “I’m poor, miserable, and a sinner… After confession, I feel dizzy.” He added, “It’s helpful to have that grounding reminder in coaching, especially when working with young players.”

From Calipari’s perspective, it seems like fate was on his side. Despite starting the season on a rocky note—an 0-5 record in the SEC—Arkansas ended up with a commendable 22-14 season. Notably, the team made it to the Sweet Sixteen as a No. 10 seed, even pulling off an upset against Kansas.

It appears Calipari is relishing his new role in Fayetteville.
