The leader of the Portland police union is open to collaborating with federal authorities as crime and violent protests from the left-wing group Antifa continue to escalate in the city.
Following President Donald Trump’s announcement about deploying the National Guard to Portland, Oregon, to tackle crime and safeguard Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities from Antifa attacks, Sergeant John Johnson, president of the Portland Police Association, expressed his willingness to work with federal officials, according to a report on FOX News.
He stated, “Let’s identify the resources we have to address this issue. If it’s insufficient, then we need assistance. I’m not looking to give a definitive yes or no. What I hope for is that we can acknowledge the problems and collaborate as a unified government to find solutions.”
As per reports, President Trump signed an executive order in September designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. This action came shortly after the tragic incident involving the assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Investigators found shell casings linked to the murder inscribed with Antifa slogans, and the suspect, Tyler Robinson, has purportedly confessed to the crime. Prosecutors are now pursuing multiple charges against him, including the death penalty.
Trump also authorized military deployment to safeguard Portland and ICE facilities that he claims are under attack from Antifa.
However, Democrats have opposed these measures. Trump criticized Democratic leaders in cities like Portland and Chicago for allegedly wanting to exacerbate crime, contrasting that with his administration’s goal of reducing it.
Reports indicate that Antifa-associated groups have targeted ICE facilities in Portland, and local law enforcement has been blamed for not doing enough to curb the unrest.
Schmautz mentioned to Fox that the Portland Police Department is significantly understaffed and highlighted the prevalent “anti-police rhetoric” within the City Council.
He remarked, “We’re still trying to recover from a major surge in crime rates. The number of murders rose dramatically from 2020 to 2023. Just last month, there were nine, and while there’s been a slow decline, it’s a challenging situation.”
