Debate Over Katie Porter’s Backlash
On a recent episode of MSNBC’s “The Chris Jansing Report,” a discussion unfolded regarding the backlash against California’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Katie Porter. The panel explored whether this reaction reflects a “double standard” for women in the political arena.
This conversation was sparked by the release of previously unseen footage from 2021, which featured Porter sternly telling a staff member to “get out of my shot” during a video interview. Jansing commented, “It’s tough to watch, but would people react differently if she were a man? Is this an example of a double standard in politics, or is it just bad behavior?”
Tara Setmeyer, a former adviser to the Lincoln Project, weighed in, labeling the video as “overall bad” while asserting that there is indeed a double standard for women. She cited past examples, including Hillary Clinton’s treatment during her presidential campaign and the media’s coverage of Kamala Harris, suggesting that male politicians often escape similar scrutiny. She noted, “Men can behave poorly and still gain power, which is not the case for women.”
Porter’s recent interviews drew criticism after clips surfaced online, including one instance where she threatened to end an interview with CBS California’s Julie Watts. This stirred backlash across both liberal and conservative circles.
In another clip, Porter appeared frustrated with a follow-up question from Watts, attempting to leave the situation. “I don’t want to go through an unfortunate experience with him,” she remarked, anxious about what was being documented on camera.
As the debate continues, Fox News Digital has reached out to Porter’s campaign for further comments.
