Cleveland Browns Rookie Shedur Sanders Responds to Rex Ryan’s Criticism
Rookie Shedur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns addressed comments made by former NFL coach Rex Ryan during a segment on ESPN’s “Get Up.” Ryan had expressed criticism toward Sanders, remarking on his demeanor and approach. “This guy folds his arms and says, ‘You could be the starting quarterback.’ If I know it, the whole league knows it,” Ryan stated, urging Sanders to take his role more seriously.
In a response to reporters following practice, Sanders seemed unfazed. “He’s just trying to start something,” he commented, emphasizing a desire to maintain a positive outlook. “We’re not going to have negativity going forward. Whatever the negative, we don’t talk about it and we won’t talk about it,” he added, suggesting a shift in focus toward constructive discussions.
Additionally, Sanders spoke about a recent incident regarding teammate Dillon Gabriel being named the starting quarterback. When reporters inquired about his reaction, Sanders chose to respond quietly instead of verbally. “I don’t think everyone likes to be playful all the time,” he said, reflecting on the diverse interactions among team members.
After the team’s trade of veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t elevate Sanders to the backup position behind Gabriel for the upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, opting to deliberate on the decision throughout the week.
Reflecting on his situation, Sanders expressed optimism, stating, “We can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” He acknowledged his mental resilience and the excitement that arises when there’s hope for the future. “Whatever my role is here, I’m grateful. I’m happy just to be able to do it,” he concluded.
