Fetterman frustrates Democrats while gaining GOP supporters

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania was once seen as a potential contender for the Democratic presidential primary in 2028. However, his support among Democratic voters has waned lately due to his growing disagreements with them on various matters.

Specifically, Fetterman publicly challenged the strategy of Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, who proposed extending expired Affordable Care Act grants as a trade-off for government funding. He has also sided with House Republicans on funding bills, showing alignment with Senators like Catherine Cortez Masto and Angus King, who is an independent but aligns with the Democrats.

Unlike many of his colleagues, who readily criticize former President Trump and his policies, Fetterman has refrained from doing so. Recently, he praised Trump for the “historic” peace agreement between Israel and Hamas.

In an interview, Fetterman made it clear that he doesn’t want to be part of a Democratic Party that labels people as Nazis or fascists. This sentiment has led to a disconnect with many Democrats. If he chooses to run for re-election in 2028, he may face a challenging primary. A Democratic strategist remarked that he was elected on a platform of economic populism but has since aligned himself with more conservative views.

Recent polling data reveals a significant shift in Fetterman’s standing among Pennsylvania Democrats. According to a Quinnipiac University survey, 54% of Democrats disapprove of his performance, a stark contrast to last year’s approval rating of 80%.

Interestingly, his approval rating has risen among Republicans, with 62% expressing support. This has led to concerns among Democrats about his strategy, as he risks alienating the party’s base while appealing to GOP voters.

When Fetterman was elected in 2022, many viewed him as a progressive figure. However, some believe he has drifted further to the right, causing frustration within the party. Democrats speculate that he might follow the path of former Senator Joe Manchin, who transitioned to being an independent.

Some Democrats feel betrayed by Fetterman’s shift away from the principles he campaigned on, believing he has undermined the aspirations for progressive populism.

Fetterman has stated that he has no intention of leaving the Democratic Party. In interviews, he has also criticized the party for losing its way, suggesting that a return to traditional values is necessary for success in future elections.

He cautioned that Democrats, currently in the minority, risk losing further power by not effectively addressing government shutdown issues, which could inadvertently boost Trump’s influence over federal operations.

Various Democratic senators have expressed that they believe Fetterman is not aligned with the overall party direction. One senator described him as “irrelevant,” emphasizing his lack of participation in party discussions. Others, like Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, have chosen not to comment on his current standing, with Murphy noting dissatisfaction among voters regarding recent votes that diverged from party ideals.

Despite these challenges, some strategists argue that Fetterman still has an opportunity to reconnect with Democratic voters, while also potentially appealing to Republican supporters to strengthen his position.
