GOP Senate Candidate Criticizes Weak Democratic Rival for Shutdown

Georgia Republican Rep. Buddy Carter Hits Sen. Ossoff in New Ad

Georgia Republican Rep. Buddy Carter launched an advertisement on Friday targeting Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff. The ad claims that Ossoff has consistently aligned with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to facilitate government shutdowns.

Carter’s ad highlights Ossoff’s alleged misuse of taxpayer funds for aiding health care for undocumented immigrants and warns that a government shutdown could jeopardize paychecks for about 1.3 million active-duty military personnel. Ossoff has voted against bipartisan spending bills aimed at funding the government seven times, which is notable, especially since he is seen as one of the most vulnerable Democratic senators heading into the 2026 election.

The advertisement is a 30-second piece, part of a larger ad campaign that reportedly exceeds seven figures, set to air across broadcast, cable, streaming services, and through direct mail.

Carter has largely aligned with his fellow House Republicans who advocated for extending government funding levels to avoid a shutdown in September. Although three Senate Democrats support the House’s recently passed bill, Ossoff has not yet added his vote. The government could reopen if five additional Democrats back a bipartisan measure to temporarily fund operations.

With the funding deadlock unresolved, U.S. military members are at risk of missing their next paycheck, which is scheduled for October 15th.

The narrator of the ad states, “Instead of paying our soldiers, ‘Shutdown John’ has voted to shut down the entire government five times, and counting. Our troops were absent because Jon Ossoff loves illegal immigrants more than we love them.”

The ad emphasizes not letting “Shut Down John” undermine values again.

There was no immediate reaction from Ossoff’s spokesperson regarding the ad.

Ossoff supports a Democratic funding plan that proposes around $1.5 trillion in new spending to temporarily keep the government afloat. Republicans have argued that the health care aspects of this bill could potentially allow noncitizens and some undocumented individuals to benefit from taxpayer-funded services.

The ad also paints a favorable picture of Carter, who often describes himself as a “MAGA warrior.” Recently, he sent a letter to the Justice Department, requesting an inquiry into organizations funded by leftist benefactor George Soros over potential links to politically motivated violence.

Carter is among three Republican candidates looking to take on Ossoff in the upcoming general election, alongside Georgia Rep. Mike Collins and former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley.

Current polls indicate a competitive race, with Collins leading among the Republican contenders so far.

Republicans view Ossoff’s seat as a prime target, but Georgia Democrats are rallying support to counter any Republican threats. The incumbent senator has successfully raised $12 million from July to September and enters the final fundraising quarter of the year with $21 million on hand.
