On Thursday, former Vice President Harris criticized New York Attorney General Letitia James regarding her prosecution, pointing out a perceived lack of evidence.
“Today, we found out that the New York State Attorney General has issued an indictment, even though the very first prosecutor who reviewed this case—who, by the way, is described as a conservative Republican—concluded there wasn’t enough evidence,” Harris shared with a crowded audience at the Warner Theater while promoting her new memoir, “107 Days.”
The indictment against James was issued by a federal grand jury, stemming from allegations tied to the Trump administration, which accused her of mortgage fraud involving claims of two primary residences. Interim U.S. Attorney Lindsay Harrigan, who previously served as President Trump’s personal attorney and is currently the sole prosecutor on this case, has pressed charges of bank fraud and false statements against financial institutions alongside the New York state attorney general.
Harrigan, who took her oath of office last month as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, has been pursuing cases involving Trump and former FBI Director James Comey, both of whom have had a contentious relationship. Her predecessor, Eric Siebert, resigned on September 19 after facing pressure from the Trump administration for declining to pursue charges against James.
Harris informed the audience that Trump has surrounded himself with “incompetent individuals to execute his vendettas.”
“Think about it,” she remarked. “The attorney general of New York faced indictment based on the views of a former prosecutor who likely didn’t support her or me, claiming there simply wasn’t enough evidence.”
Concerns have emerged among legal experts, Democrats, and some Republicans that Trump may be using the Justice Department for partisan prosecutions. James herself voiced criticism, describing the president’s actions as a “desperate weaponization of our justice system.”
“These charges lack merit, and it’s clear from the President’s public statements that his primary goal is political revenge at any cost,” emphasized prosecutors from New York.
Previously, James succeeded in a civil fraud lawsuit against Trump, several of his business associates, and three of his children in 2022 following an extensive investigation into the Trump Organization. Trump was initially ordered to pay over $450 million in fines, a decision later overturned by a New York appeals court.
During Harris’ remarks at the event, there were protests related to Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. This situation arose after both parties reached an agreement on the first phase of a 20-point peace plan introduced by Trump the previous month.
The disturbance seemed to unsettle Harris.
“Did you know? I’m not the president of the United States,” she responded.
