Tom Steyer’s $12 Million Contribution to California Governor’s Gerrymandering Efforts
Billionaire Tom Steyer has made headlines with his recent donation of $12 million to support California Governor Gavin Newsom’s gerrymandering efforts. This comes in the wake of Steyer’s unsuccessful presidential campaign and amid the controversies surrounding President Donald Trump’s impeachment initiatives.
After a rocky attempt at the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, where he faced significant rejection, particularly from black voters in South Carolina, Steyer is now pivoting his focus. His campaign, which included significant financial backing for the “Need to Impeach” initiative, highlights a complex relationship with political activism. Interestingly, Steyer’s wealth largely stems from fossil fuel investments, which adds an ironic twist to his funding for climate change initiatives.
The timing of this substantial donation is noteworthy, especially since Steyer has not publicly contributed to assist the thousands affected by California’s wildfires. He joins other prominent Democratic donors, including George Soros, in backing Newsom’s Proposition 50.
In his new advertisement part of the “Stick It to Trump” campaign, a Trump impersonator is shown throwing a tantrum as he learns of Proposition 50’s success. This playful mockery seems aimed at galvanizing support for the upcoming measures.
Rumors are swirling that Steyer might have ambitions to run for California governor, particularly after former Congresswoman Katie Porter experienced a notable slip during a recent CBS interview.
His announcement stirred up speculation about his interest in the 2026 gubernatorial race, which appears to be in flux with shifting frontrunners. Political analysts note that this isn’t the first time Steyer has invested in ballot measure campaigns while contemplating a return to state politics, emphasizing his persistent presence in the arena despite past challenges.
One spokesperson for Steyer remarked, “Tom has always stood up to Donald Trump, which is why we launched the ‘Stick to Trump’ campaign.” They mentioned his early advocacy for impeachment and his strong support for Proposition 50, framing it as a crucial step to curb Trump’s influence in Congress.
Proposition 50 does face legal challenges, but if successful, it would enable politicians to redraw the state’s legislative maps, overriding residents’ preferences. Recent polling indicates that the measure might gain traction, bolstered by Newsom’s portrayal of it as a necessary counter to Trump’s agenda, despite the potential conflict with California’s independent redistricting commission.
