Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Maria Colina Machado

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Maria Colina Machado, a leader in the Venezuelan opposition. She dedicated the honor to her fellow citizens and expressed gratitude toward President Trump for his unwavering support for democracy in Venezuela.

Machado celebrated the acknowledgment of Venezuela’s fight for freedom in a recent post on X. She stated, “We stand on the brink of victory. Now, more than ever, we look to President Trump, the people of the United States, the nations of Latin America, and all the world’s democracies as vital allies in our pursuit of freedom and democracy.”

She also remarked, “I dedicate this award to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his steadfast support of our cause.” Her comments coincided with rising tensions involving the U.S., the Venezuelan government, and Trump’s own public push for the Nobel Prize ceremony.

The U.S. has recently conducted multiple operations against ships suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean, one of which reportedly involved the secretary of defense in international waters near Venezuela. This prompted the Venezuelan government to criticize U.S. actions, stating they threaten their national security and breach international law. At the same time, Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have been vocal about their disapproval of the Venezuelan leadership.

“Maduro’s illegitimate regime is undermining Venezuela’s institutions, violating human rights, and jeopardizing regional security,” Rubio wrote, mentioning Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

In the announcement regarding Machado’s award, the Nobel Committee of Norway praised her “civilian courage” in overcoming a “brutal authoritarian regime.” Meanwhile, Trump and his associates have been publicly advocating for the Nobel Peace Prize in recent weeks, citing his role in resolving several conflicts since his presidency began.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) formally nominated Trump for the prize on Thursday, highlighting his role in facilitating a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas. The nomination deadline, typically January 31, was set at the start of Trump’s second term.

Following Machado’s accolade announcement, White House aide Stephen Chan suggested that the Nobel Committee had chosen to focus on “politics over peace.” Trump previously mentioned that it would be an “insult to our country” if he didn’t receive the award. Yet, in the days prior to the announcement, he seemed to backtrack, claiming, “[the committee] can do what they wish.”

He concluded with, “That’s not why I did it. I did it because it saved a lot of lives.”
