Venezuelan Opposition Leader Receives Nobel Peace Prize
Maria Colina Machado, a prominent figure in Venezuela’s opposition, recently received the Nobel Peace Prize. On Friday, she dedicated this recognition to President Donald Trump and the suffering citizens of her country.
As a key leader in the movement against the ruling party, Machado acknowledged Trump’s support. “This recognition highlights the fight of all Venezuelans and should propel us toward our mission of achieving freedom,” she stated. “We are on the verge of victory, and now, more than ever, we see President Trump, the American people, and the global democracies as crucial allies in our pursuit of democracy.”
Machado also underscored her gratitude towards Trump during her announcement, saying it was for his steadfast support. “On behalf of the Venezuelan people, I express our appreciation to President Trump and his administration for acknowledging the crisis we face,” she remarked. “Maduro has made Venezuela a significant threat to national security and stability in the region.”
She has consistently supported Trump’s stance against President Nicolás Maduro and his government’s connection to drug trafficking. Last month, following a U.S. airstrike that reportedly killed members of a drug gang in Venezuela, she appeared on a news program to call for Maduro to step down.
Machado played a crucial role in mobilizing millions of Venezuelans to reject Maduro during last year’s elections. According to Jørgen Watne Fridnes, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Machado is regarded as a “brave and dedicated champion of peace.” He noted that her efforts to promote democratic rights and achieve a transition from dictatorship to democracy were why she was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize.
Interestingly, Trump was also nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. This was due in part to his involvement in a historic agreement between Israel and Hamas, which aimed at fostering peace in the region.
