Protests Erupt in Chicago Following Immigration Crackdown
On Friday, tensions flared outside a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) facility in Chicago as four anti-ICE protesters were taken into custody. This occurred after a federal judge intervened to block President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to the area.
The situation turned chaotic as Illinois State Police, equipped in riot gear, confronted a large, unruly crowd near the ICE facility in Broadview. Protests have been rising in intensity across Chicago amid the President’s intensified focus on illegal immigration. Local reports indicated the unrest was a direct response to Trump’s strict measures.
Protesters shouted slogans like, “The whole world is watching,” while clashes ensued between them and law enforcement. Footage shared online captured moments when at least four individuals appeared to be forcibly removed from the crowd.
According to reports, those arrested were charged with resisting arrest and obstructing justice, as stated by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Demonstrations have ramped up since Trump launched Operation Midway Blitz, aimed at cracking down on undocumented immigrants. Local leaders and activists have pushed back against these efforts.
Initially, President Trump had dispatched hundreds of National Guard troops to support DHS in deportation activities in Chicago. However, a temporary restraining order was granted by District Judge April Perry, appointed by Biden, effectively halting that deployment.
Notably, just a day prior, two protesters, Ray Collins and Jocelyn Robredo, had their felony charges dismissed following a local grand jury’s decision not to indict them for an incident where they displayed weapons outside the same Broadview facility.
On the same day as the protests, Debbie Brockman—who works as a video editor for local TV—was reportedly detained by ICE agents elsewhere in Lincoln Square. She faced accusations of assaulting a federal officer, according to DHS. Video evidence showed her being apprehended, prompting cries from bystanders as she fell to the ground.
Subsequently, she was taken into an unmarked minivan, which collided with another vehicle while attempting to navigate through the crowd of demonstrators.
