Nevada Republican criticizes 'foolish' Trump for urging indictments

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) expressed his disapproval on Friday regarding President Trump’s call for indictments against New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

“I think it was a mistake,” Bacon remarked in an interview with CNN’s Pamela Brown. “I don’t find it appropriate for him to request these charges. It feels unseemly. It’s not typical behavior for presidents. To me, it seems… well, foolish.”

Bacon suggested that by making these demands, Comey and James could use Trump’s words as part of their defense in ongoing lawsuits against them.

Trump’s request led to a real indictment, with Comey facing charges for allegedly providing false statements to Congress and obstructing proceedings. He has pleaded not guilty.

James, on the other hand, is dealing with charges related to bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution. She is set to appear in court for the first time on October 24 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Bacon raised concerns about the impartiality of Attorney General Pam Bondi in light of the indictment.

“From an outsider’s perspective, when he makes a request and a prosecution follows, it really raises questions about fair justice,” he explained. “Sure, they still need a grand jury for an indictment, so if they are guilty, accountability is necessary.”

He further claimed that Trump’s involvement is detrimental to the legal process.

“Someone needs to advise them in the office to stop discussing and demanding indictments because this is not helping their cause,” he added.

Notably, Bacon, who isn’t seeking re-election for his House seat, has openly criticized Trump’s actions and policies.

Last month, he addressed former President Biden on social media, criticizing his remarks on the conflict with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while omitting any mention of Vladimir Putin, who initiated the 2022 invasion.

Bacon tweeted, “Mr. President, Putin is the aggressor, and this war is unfolding under your watch. History will judge your actions and inactions for decades to come.”
