Democrats Stand Firm Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown
As the government shutdown drags into its third week, military and federal workers are starting to feel the financial pinch. House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York, along with other Democrats, has been vocal in attributing the blame to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
In a recent fundraising email, Jeffries emphasized his steadfastness, urging, “Democrats will stand up to address the Republican health care crisis. We won’t back down until the problem is fixed. America deserves better.” He ended the email with his familiar phrase: “Keep the faith alive.”
Negotiations are reportedly ongoing in the Senate, but without any significant progress toward resolving the government shutdown or extending Obamacare tax credits.
It seems, based on Jeffries’ comments, that Democrats aren’t yielding. He noted, “Republicans thought we would back down because of deepfake videos, threats, and lies. This is not an opportunity. Let’s stop layoffs, lower costs, and save on health care.”
Other House Democrats have also been actively fundraising amid the crisis. Representative Janelle Bynum from Oregon has sent out multiple emails to her supporters. In one, her team stressed that “the stakes are no more,” asserting her commitment to fight for Oregonians.
Bynum expressed frustration over a Republican attack ad that blamed her for the shutdown. “They are targeting me for their failures in leadership and the chaos they have caused in Washington,” she stated, urging donations to help counter these attacks.
In another email from Representative Dave Minn of California, he argued that controlling Congress next year is vital to prevent future shutdowns. “If you can donate, I would really appreciate it. We need to protect this battleground next year,” he wrote.
He also outlined the Democrats’ demands, which include reversing Republican cuts to Medicaid and extending the Obamacare tax credit for affordable healthcare, insisting these shouldn’t be up for debate.
Representative Marcy Kaptur from Ohio directly asked her supporters to contribute amounts like $10 or $25 to fight against what she called a reckless shutdown.
Addressing reporters, Jeffries criticized the Republican spending bill meant to reopen the government, labeling it as “a partisan spending bill that threatens Americans’ health care and raises the cost of living for millions.”
Attempts to reach out to the offices of Jeffries, Bynum, Minn, and Kaptur for further comments went unanswered.
