A’ja Wilson Leads Aces to Championship Victory
A’ja Wilson demonstrated her prowess as a four-time WNBA MVP, scoring 31 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the Las Vegas Aces’ victory over the Phoenix Mercury. The Aces clinched their third title in four years with a final score of 97-86 in Game 4.
In the series, Wilson averaged 28.5 points and 11.6 rebounds, ultimately earning the Finals MVP title. Her achievement is historic; she is the first player in WNBA history to receive the Regular Season MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP awards in the same season.
The championship trophy was presented to the Aces by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, although her presence drew some boos from a passionate group of Las Vegas fans at the arena in Phoenix.
Las Vegas never trailed during this decisive game, leading 30-21 by the end of the first quarter with an impressive 55% shooting. They even extended their lead to 19 points early in the second quarter after hitting three consecutive three-pointers.
This win marked a significant achievement as it concluded the league’s first best-of-seven finals. The Aces scored 54 points in the first half and maintained an average of over 90 points per game throughout the series.
As the fourth quarter began, the Aces led 76-62, but the Mercury managed to go on an 8-0 run, narrowing the lead to 76-70 with just under eight minutes left. That, however, was as close as they would come.
Wilson made an appearance at the postgame press conference decked out in oversized ski goggles from the celebratory champagne shower, playfully waving a pink tambourine whenever she liked a question. “This symbolizes the joy we have right now,” she remarked, laughing. “I’m just really thankful to be with this group. It’s not about the alcohol.”
The Mercury’s coach, Nate Tibbetts, faced an ejection in the third quarter after receiving two quick technical fouls.
This championship was perhaps the most challenging for the Aces, who entered August with a lackluster 14-14 record, having just suffered a staggering home loss to Minnesota by 53 points.
Instead of fracturing from their previous loss, the team rallied together, not losing a single game during the remainder of the regular season. They managed an impressive 16-game winning streak, finishing with a record of 25 wins and just 3 losses, including playoffs.
