Remembering a Wild Moment with Tony Danza

Ever had a memory that feels fuzzy? You know, that nagging thought—did it really happen or is it just your brain playing tricks? Well, I found myself in that exact situation when I thought about Tony Danza and a go-kart incident involving Rusty Wallace. And guess what? That moment took place exactly 21 years ago.

If you remember—or maybe you’ve tried to forget—Tony Danza, known for classic shows like “Taxi” and “Who’s the Boss?” hosted a daytime talk show from 2004 to 2006 called “The Tony Danza Show.” It also shared its name with a sitcom that barely made it through five episodes back in 1997. Not iconic by any means, unless, of course, you found joy in listening to him talk about his daughter’s spelling test or making linguine.

But there was one day, May 9, 2005, that truly stood out during the series.

Danza had NASCAR star Rusty Wallace as a guest, and, in typical fashion for daytime talk, they decided to race some go-karts. And, well, things didn’t go as planned.

If it had gone smoothly, it would likely be a fading memory now. But there was a significant mishap—one that involved a go-kart rolling uncontrollably, which made it beyond memorable.

You might assume that someone with Danza’s experience driving a taxi would have better luck. I had this vague memory of seeing a promo for it but kept thinking, “Did that really happen or was it all in my head?” I mean, who wouldn’t want that to be real? It’s just so absurdly hilarious. But I did worry my wandering mind might spiral into writing fanfiction about Tony Danza and NASCAR.

The good news is that Tony came out of the situation unharmed, and even better, this unforgettable moment has found its way into internet lore for over two decades now.
