Utkarsh Ambudkar Hints at Jay’s Destiny in ‘Ghosts’ Season 5 Following Season 4’s Cliffhanger: “He’s Protection is Like Every Type of Sports Gear Possible”

Jay’s Chandelier Dilemma in Season 5 of *Ghost*

So, how many near misses with a falling chandelier does Jay have to endure before he decides to cut ties with the devil? Utkarsh Ambudkar, who plays Jay, suggests it’s more than a few.

In the Season 4 finale of the popular CBS comedy, Jay discovers that, instead of hiring a credible publicist for his new restaurant, he has unwittingly made a deal with the devil—or at least someone very close to that dark side. His new high-profile publicist is Elias Woodstone, portrayed by Matt Walsh, who happens to be the unsavory ex-husband of Hetty, played by Rebecca Wysocki. This arrangement forces Jay into a soul contract.

Fast forward three months after the finale, and the ghosts return in the Season 5 premiere titled “Soul Custody,” with an urgent mission to rescue Jay from his dire agreement with Elias. They’re willing to tackle a few daunting situations along the way.

“The last we saw of Jay, he barely escaped a chandelier falling on him. So, when Season 5 kicks off, he’s got a looming deadline hanging over him. Sam and the others are genuinely worried. He’s really scared,” Ambudkar shared with DECIDER in a chat before the season launch. “He’s doing what he can to protect himself, which means he’s practically wrapped in sports padding and is actively searching for a way to outsmart Elias. More importantly, he’s questioning what kind of afterlife awaits him if Elias prevails. So, he’s pretty desperate by the time we meet him again.”

Despite the pressing circumstances, Ambudkar reflects on the joy of portraying a character caught in such chaotic situations. Jay often plays the confused one, not quite absorbing the frantic energy around him, being the only non-ghost who can’t see the spirits at Woodstone B&B.

Ambudkar also mentioned Jay’s somewhat unconventional preparations for what he fears might be his end. Instead of writing a will or reaching out to loved ones, Jay’s more focused on practical things—like packing snacks for a possible departure.

“I mean, should I anticipate going into a ghost trap? What snacks do I bring if I might die? I keep cookies handy because they’re crucial for whatever remains of me after I’m gone,” he quipped. “There’s something exhilarating about being in the eye of a hurricane while all these ghosts are in a tizzy, and Sam is just trying to figure things out.”

To see how Jay’s story unfolds or if Elias ultimately gains control over him, fans will need to catch the Season 5 premiere of *Ghost*, which airs on CBS.

*Ghost* is set to return for its fifth season on October 16th at 8:30 PM ET on CBS, with new episodes streaming the following day on Paramount+.
