Portland Mayor Removes Police Barriers Around ICE Facility

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has reportedly decided to take down police tape near U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centers this week. This move comes even as federal officials called for a buffer zone around ICE locations.

On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited the ICE site, during which Portland Police Commissioner Bob Day noted that authorities had set up a perimeter. Interestingly, reports indicate that the border was dismantled a day later.

Mayor Critiques Federal Involvement

The city revealed that a directive from Scott Bradford, the U.S. attorney for Oregon, informed Commissioner Day that “federal agents must have unimpeded access” to their offices without interference, and the mayor was urged to create a definitive perimeter around ICE facilities. This perimeter was to align with the existing boundary set for the Secretary’s visit.

In response, Mayor Wilson conveyed to DHS General Counsel James Percival that, while the request for unfettered access was understood, local public safety officials would continue to evaluate conditions on the ground and make decisions based on community safety.

Federal Plans Intensify Amid Tensions

Recently, President Trump expressed a desire to send the National Guard to Portland, although this initiative seems to have faced some legal hurdles.

In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump stated that he would direct Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth to deploy necessary military forces to protect Portland and the besieged ICE facility from possible attacks by groups like Antifa. It’s a messy situation, and the legal complexities seem to be adding to the uncertainty.

Both the Oregon U.S. Attorney’s Office and the City of Portland were approached for comments, but responses were not immediately available.
