Zelenskiy Sees Hope in Trump’s Peace Efforts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy recently expressed optimism regarding the potential end of the Russia-Ukraine war, citing President Donald Trump’s success in negotiating a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas as a hopeful sign.
On Saturday, Zelenskiy took to social media to share his thoughts, stating that he had a “very positive and productive” conversation with Trump. He commended Trump for his achievements in the Middle East, acknowledging it as “an outstanding accomplishment.”
“If we can stop the war in one region, we can certainly stop other wars, including the Russian war,” Zelenskiy remarked in English on Facebook.
The recent peace agreement was brokered by Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, working alongside the governments of Qatar and Egypt. Both Israel and Hamas agreed to the initial phase of the deal, which was officially signed on Friday.
Zelenskiy mentioned to Trump the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy systems, expressing gratitude for the U.S. president’s willingness to help. They also discussed ways to enhance Ukraine’s air defenses and progress on specific agreements.
On Friday, just before their phone call, Russia launched a significant assault on Ukraine’s energy grid, resulting in power outages across parts of Kyiv and nine other regions.
Zelenskiy stated, “The Russian side must be prepared to engage in real diplomacy. This can be achieved through force. Thank you, Mr. President!”
Trump had previously met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August, but the discussions failed to yield an agreement to resolve the ongoing war in Europe. At a recent summit of former Soviet states in Tajikistan, Putin praised Trump’s efforts in Israel.
“He is really making a lot of efforts to resolve such a complex crisis that has been going on for years, even decades,” Putin said.
In late September, Trump conveyed on Truth Social his thoughts about the war in Ukraine, indicating that, based on his understanding of the military and economic situation, Ukraine, with EU support, could restore its original territory. He expressed confidence that Russia has been engaging in a prolonged conflict that could have ended much sooner with a powerful military intervention.
