Jets’ Struggles Amid Coach’s Optimism
Even with all the optimistic messages from new head coach Aaron Glenn, the New York Jets are still the only undefeated team in the NFL.
Following a disappointing 37-22 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys last week, Glenn highlighted that their recent practice was one of the best. He also shared positive insights about team bonding that happened at a hotel in London while preparing to face the Denver Broncos.
As the Jets head toward an anticipated 16-season playoff drought, former Jets wide receiver Eric Decker mentioned in a recent interview that “it feels like there’s probably a curse” hanging over the franchise.
Looking back, Decker recalled his three seasons with the Jets, where he experienced a 10-6 record in his second season but, unfortunately, still missed the playoffs. Interestingly, he didn’t sense any “haunted” atmosphere during that time; instead, he has good memories from playing in East Rutherford.
“We had a solid team and should’ve made the playoffs, but we stumbled ourselves,” Decker said. “Winning 10 games and still not getting in was tough. But everyone in the facility was trying to contribute and help us succeed…” He went on, “I didn’t have that ‘Here we go again, Jets’ feeling. In the NFL, progress is incremental—those moments are what truly matter.”
Despite Glenn’s efforts, frustrations are apparent. Decker pointed out that the Jets just need to focus on what they can control.
“The current mentality in football is pretty intense; if you don’t perform immediately, you’re out. There’s a lot of pressure on both players and coaches. If players aren’t punctual or aren’t giving their all, those are controllable issues,” he noted. “That raises questions about internal dynamics. It seems like there’s a lack of leadership or perhaps a need for a shift.” He continued, “Even if players are putting forth their best effort, performance can still be tricky to manage, and that’s not always under their control.”
Decker remains optimistic about future improvements, adding, “I think things will get better. It just depends on who steps up to take charge.”
