Gotham FC’s Undefeated Streak Ends, Still Eyeing Playoffs

Gotham FC’s unbeaten run came to a halt on Saturday, but they still have hopes for the playoffs.

They suffered a 2-0 defeat to Kansas City at CPKC Stadium, which bumped them down to fourth place in the NWSL standings.

The match was tightly contested, featuring 34 fouls between the two teams, yet neither managed a shot on goal in the first half-hour.

Gotham had a few opportunities, with players like Katie Stengel and Rose Lovell just missing the target on crucial attempts.

Kansas City, boasting the best record in the league at 20-2-2, is significantly ahead, sitting 16 points clear of second-place Washington.

“It was a close game,” Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amoros remarked. “The team followed the game plan well. We limited their chances and controlled possession, but they converted when it mattered and took home the three points. Hopefully, we face them again in the playoffs.”

Amoros added, “This is a game you remember because even in defeat, you want a rematch. I’m proud of how our team managed different situations. It was just one of those games.”

Prior to this match, Gotham had gone 11 games without a loss across all competitions, matching the franchise record for the longest unbeaten streak, including seven games in the NWSL (4-3).

Despite the setback, Gotham (9-8-7) could still secure a postseason spot this weekend, contingent on Washington beating North Carolina and Angel City either winning or drawing against Houston.

A top-four finish would mean Gotham would host a playoff game, and West GM Yael Apfelbusch expressed the club’s ambition to reach that goal.

“We’d love to host a playoff game,” Apfelbusch previously noted. “We’re very ambitious. Sure, there are teams that have started strong, but we want to be at the top of the standings. Hosting a playoff game seems like a realistic aim.”
