Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for mayor of New York, criticized the indictment of Attorney General Letitia James as a clear act of political retribution, asserting it was “the only thing” President Trump could resort to.
“We’ve seen this pattern, whether it involves people like former FBI Director James Comey or Attorney General James. Trump isn’t targeting any specific individual,” Mamdani mentioned during an appearance on CNN’s “The Source with Caitlan Collins.” “This reflects a key aspect of his political strategy; it’s really the only thing he can deliver on these days.”
Mamdani also commented on Trump’s threats, saying, “When he talks about denaturalizing, deporting, or arresting me, I believe there’s a genuine intent behind those words.” However, he added that many are prepared to face the consequences to stand firm for New Yorkers.
He viewed the indictment against James as an abuse of the justice system, aimed at setting an example, and defended her as someone who prioritizes the city, state, and its residents.
“Honestly, that’s the reason Donald Trump is targeting her,” Mamdani declared.
When asked about handling potential cuts to New York City’s infrastructure funding by the president, Mamdani stated, “We plan to utilize every legal option available.” Trump has signaled he might withdraw additional funding if Mamdani wins the mayoral election.
“We indict Trump because we often treat his statements as if they’re legally sound solely because they come from him,” he remarked.
The charges against James involve bank fraud and allegedly providing false information to a bank, related to a 2020 real estate deal in Norfolk, Virginia. She is scheduled for arraignment in federal court on October 24.
Separately, Comey has denied allegations of lying to Congress in relation to his 2020 testimony about the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.
Recently, Trump seemed to direct Attorney General Pam Bondi to probe his political adversaries, including Comey, James, and Senator Adam Schiff from California.
“We cannot afford further delays. This is damaging our reputation and credibility,” Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social. “I’ve been impeached twice and indicted multiple times without cause. Justice must be served immediately!”
