Debate Erupts Over Ejection in Game-Winning Home Run

When a home run trot feels more like a leisurely stroll, umpires might not take it lightly. Recently, Tre Phelps of Georgia was ejected for showboating after hitting a crucial home run, contributing to the Bulldogs’ 6-1 victory against Liberty on Sunday. Coach Wes Johnson faced his own consequences as well.

Johnson will sit out Georgia’s upcoming game against Mississippi State on Friday, though he won’t face additional penalties.

In a post on his Instagram Story, Johnson humorously commented, “By the way, I got thrown out for thanking my family,” reflecting on the incident.

The ejection has sparked heated discussions online about whether Phelps’s actions warranted such a response, particularly given the consequences that followed.

At the time of the home run, Georgia was down 1-0 in the sixth inning, with one out and a runner on base. Phelps sent a two-run hit over the left field fence, finally besting Liberty’s pitcher, Cooper Harrington.

After hitting the home run, Phelps paused to gaze at home plate for a moment, then tossed his bat and commenced what many described as a slow trot around the bases.

He directed his attention to the Liberty dugout, where family members were seated, gesturing before turning back to complete his circuit around the bases.

As he celebrated, the first baseman from Liberty made a remark, while their second baseman also commented, but Phelps continued to showboat unabated.

Even as he passed third base, Phelps’s celebration didn’t cease; he turned his back to the bat and took an exaggerated final stride toward home plate.

To add to the drama, he made one last step before actually touching home plate. While the ESPN broadcast did not catch the ejection process, a commentator mentioned the signal was visible during Johnson’s heated argument with the umpire.

Fans began to boo amid the confrontation between Johnson and another staff member, yet Phelps appeared unaware of the unfolding scene in the dugout.

Phelps started pointing out on the field while Johnson seemed increasingly frustrated. At one point, Johnson retreated to the dugout to grab Phelps’s jersey.

When discussing the incident, Johnson and Liberty coach Bradley LeCroy offered contrasting perspectives on whether Phelps’s actions crossed a line.

Johnson insisted, “Tre’s family was sitting in the stands. He was waving to them. The refs… I’m not the referee. They thought he was addressing the dugout.”

LeCroy, however, expressed his displeasure, stating that Phelps had mocked his team, although he admitted he did not overhear the specifics of Phelps’s comments.

In LeCroy’s words, “I’m just protecting my players, that’s all. I have nothing to do with the sending off, but I will protect my players 100 percent. He addressed our dugout and looked right at it.”

Liberty infielder Riley DeCandido felt the ejection was justified, stating, “That was a big swing. I’m all about celebrating, but when you throw the bat and say what he did, it was a given.”
