The struggling Jets made an appearance in the new season of “Saturday Night Live” this week.
Colin Jost, host of Weekend Update, took a jab at the team’s former quarterback, Mark Sanchez, who was arrested last week in Indianapolis following a drunken altercation with a delivery driver outside a bar where a current Fox analyst was injured.
“Mark Sanchez is facing accusations of driving while intoxicated and assaulting a delivery driver before allegedly stabbing him. It’s a real penalty mix-up; he gets repeat first downs,” Jost joked during his segment. “If found guilty, Sanchez might end up in prison or, even worse, back with the Jets.”
Sanchez, who is 38 years old, could be looking at six years behind bars and a fine of up to $10,000 for allegedly assaulting Perry Toll, 69. Sanchez claims he was stabbed in self-defense.
Prosecutors have filed three misdemeanor charges against Sanchez, which include public intoxication, battery causing bodily injury, and unauthorized vehicle entry, alongside a felony charge of battery resulting in great bodily injury.
From 2009 to 2012, Sanchez played for the Jets and took them to the AFC Championship Game twice. Unfortunately, he missed the entire 2013 season due to a shoulder injury and spent another four years in the NFL with Philadelphia, Dallas, and Washington. The Jets have not made it to the playoffs since 2010, holding the current record for the longest playoff drought in the league.
Sanchez was in Indianapolis last weekend for the Colts-Raiders game on FOX Sports but was later hospitalized after undergoing surgery for a stab wound to his chest. He was then taken directly to the Marion County Jail Central Booking, where he posted $300 cash bail.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is set to appear in court in early November.
