Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has been discharged from the hospital and expressed his gratitude towards the medical team that “saved my life” following his arrest for assault in Indianapolis on Sunday.
This marks Sanchez’s first public remarks since being taken to the Marion County Jail. He didn’t delve into the details of the incident that led to felony assault charges and three misdemeanors. It stems from a confrontation he had with an elderly truck driver over the weekend, during which he was stabbed.
“My focus now is on healing,” Sanchez said in an interview with Fox 59 News and CBS 4 Indy’s Max Lewis, sharing his appreciation for the trauma surgeon, stating, “She saved my life, so I’m grateful to her.”
Upon his release, Sanchez reaffirmed his commitment to recovery and extended his thanks to first responders and healthcare personnel. He mentioned that he is “slowly recovering” and that it’s been a tough journey, but he chose not to discuss the specifics of the incident as he got into a waiting pickup truck.
The 38-year-old analyst for FOX Sports, whose arm was in a sling, faces significant legal consequences. He could potentially incur a six-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine for allegedly assaulting 69-year-old delivery driver Perry Toll, who claims he acted in self-defense by stabbing Sanchez.
Timeline of Mark Sanchez’s stabbing and arrest
Friday night
- Sanchez was in Indianapolis to serve as a Fox Sports analyst for the game between the Raiders and Colts, exhibiting unusual behavior, including reportedly “wind sprinting” in an alley.
Past midnight
- A grease truck driver, picking up oil from a nearby hotel, blocked the alley while Sanchez was running.
- Sanchez approached the driver to ask him to move, which escalated into an argument. The driver then pushed Sanchez against a wall and the ground.
- After using mace or pepper spray on Sanchez, the driver, perceiving a threat to his life, resorted to pulling a knife and stabbing Sanchez.
- Following the altercation, Sanchez fled towards the alley.
12:30 AM
- Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of someone being shot and found Sanchez at a local pub.
- Initially uncooperative, Sanchez claimed he only remembered “holding on to the window” and nothing else from the incident.
- He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
- The driver sustained severe injuries, including a laceration on his face.
Saturday
- Sanchez underwent surgery for a chest stab wound and was listed as stable.
- While in the hospital, he was charged with misdemeanor battery, public intoxication, and unauthorized vehicle entry.
Sunday
- Sanchez was released from the hospital in the morning and taken directly to the Marion County Jail, where he posted a $300 cash bond.
Monday
Earlier in the week, the charges against Sanchez were upgraded from misdemeanors of public intoxication, battery, and unauthorized vehicle entry to a felony charge for serious bodily injury.
Sanchez, who played for the Jets from 2009 to 2013, has pleaded not guilty to all allegations and posted a $300 bond following his booking. He is scheduled for a court appearance in early November.
