Long Island Woman Hits Big on “Wheel of Fortune”

A woman from Long Island had an incredible win on “Wheel of Fortune,” walking away with nearly $65,000 in prizes. This haul included a brand-new Toyota truck, a week-long tropical getaway, and a year’s supply of candy.

Katie McCann, a single mother, claimed victory during Tuesday night’s food-themed episode titled Living the Sweet Life. She attributes part of her success to her job as a lead server in the cafeteria at St. James Elementary School, which she feels gave her some familiarity with the games.

“It definitely helped,” McCann shared with a chuckle.

At 37, McCann scored $65,253 in total after successfully solving six puzzles, including quirky phrases like “One smart cookie” and “Pour me some sugar.”

Her prizes encompassed a 2025 Toyota Tacoma SR5, a week in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a year’s worth of treats from Dylan’s Candy Bar, and, notably, $13,200 in cash.

“You can see the surprise on my face every time I win. Unlike Ryan Seacrest, I do not have a poker face at all,” she said, admitting that she “blacked out” during the show and scarcely recalls the moments of answering correctly.

One particularly challenging aspect for her was the physical act of spinning the wheel.

“I’m not very tall,” McCann explained, having relocated to Hauppauge from Queens four years ago. “I had to be really pushed up behind the podium just to reach it. The wheel felt heavy to me, too.”

The Journey to the Show

McCann has always enjoyed game shows since her school days and credits “Wheel of Fortune” with helping her improve her spelling skills.

In 2023, she saw a commercial inviting people to audition for her favorite at-home show, and she decided it was time to take a shot.

Producers loved her enthusiasm and selected her for an episode, but she couldn’t make it to Los Angeles at that time.

“I had to decline, but they told me they really wanted me and put me in a contestant pool,” she recounted.

When her boss reached out last spring with another opportunity, she didn’t hesitate.

“I was like, ‘Absolutely, I have to go,’” she said, recalling how she couldn’t turn this chance down again.

Before the episode aired, keeping her win a secret was a bit tricky, especially since she loves her job and enjoys chatting with her small group of students.

Once the school reopened to the public, the response was warm and supportive, with kids even creating a congratulatory picture to display behind her workstation.

“Even the shy ones came up to talk; they were just so cute,” McCann reminisced.

“The kids are all thrilled, and I’m thrilled too.”

Her 3-year-old daughter, Brody, keeps calling her a “movie star,” which makes McCann smile.

Since McCann hasn’t traveled much, she’s particularly excited about the opportunity her win has provided. “The phrase that comes to mind is, ‘The sun is shining on my face,’” she remarked.

She also anticipates that her new truck will arrive around the time her lease on her Jeep Wrangler concludes.

“It feels like a dream come true,” McCann concluded.
