New York Mayoral Candidate’s Fundraiser Ties to Controversial Organization

New York mayoral hopeful Zoran Mamdani recently hosted a fundraiser that has sparked controversy. On Sunday night, just hours before the last living Israeli hostage was freed from Hamas captivity, he participated in the New York City Gaza 5K. This event aimed to raise money for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which has been criticized for employing individuals connected to the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel.

Mamdani shared on social media that he ran the 5K in Prospect Park alongside the Harlem Run Club, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. He even encouraged his followers to contribute financially to the cause.

However, the organization’s reputation has come under scrutiny. In August, a shocking report from the U.S. State Department recommended the abolition of UNRWA, stating it had “irreparably violated” its purpose of providing aid in Gaza. The past Trump administration demanded the agency return unused U.S. funds, and more recently, the Biden administration has withheld U.S. financial support since January 2024, intensifying calls for the agency’s disbandment.

Notably, a former Israeli Defense Minister alleged that many UNRWA employees were involved in the atrocities committed against Israel during the October 7 attacks, which resulted in significant loss of life, including over 30 Americans. The situation raises important questions about the U.N. agency’s role and effectiveness.

Mamdani’s campaign has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the implications of his fundraising efforts amid these allegations, leaving many to wonder about the potential political fallout.
