Aryna Sabalenka’s Frustration at Wuhan Open
The top female tennis player in the world, Aryna Sabalenka, recently lost her temper during a match, nearly hitting a ball boy in the process.
After her victory against Jessica Pegula in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open on Saturday, Sabalenka, frustrated by a backhand that went out of bounds, threw her racket onto the court. It bounced unexpectedly and just missed a ball boy who was standing next to the referee’s chair.
“It was a tense moment for Sabalenka. The last part of the semifinal really escalated quickly,” remarked a source from Sky Sports. According to reports, she received a warning for the racket incident but avoided further consequences.
During this match, which was tied at 5-5 in the third set, Sabalenka was already feeling the pressure, having lost her previous three matches. She ultimately lost the tiebreaker 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Pegula went on to face fellow American Coco Gauff in the final, where she was defeated 6-4, 7-5.
In earlier rounds of the tournament, Sabalenka, ranked 1st in the world, faced some challenges, including a scare from 68th-ranked Rebekah Slamkova. Sabalenka dropped the first set but managed to secure the win with scores of 6-3, 6-1 in the next two.
Sabalenka had previously claimed her second consecutive US Open title last month. Overall, she holds four Grand Slam titles but faced defeats in finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, as well as a semifinal loss at Wimbledon later that year.
