Normalization Talks May Resume Between Saudi Arabia and Israel
Britt Hume, chief political analyst for Fox News, mentioned on Monday that discussions for normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel might be on the verge of restarting as Hamas loses its stance in the region.
On Wednesday, President Trump declared that Israel and Hamas had reached the initial phase of a peace agreement facilitated by the U.S. This includes the pulling back of Israeli troops and the complete release of hostages. Appearing on “Special Report,” Hume noted that Hamas’s attack on October 7 was likely aimed at disrupting the normalization talks, which Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had indicated were progressing positively just weeks earlier.
“I think that the dynamic you mentioned was disrupted by the horrific attack of October 7 two years ago, an atrocity indeed, likely in reaction to the evolving agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel,” Hume told host Bret Baier. “It appeared that recognition was on the horizon. The terrorists seemed desperate to halt that progress.”
Hume suggested that Hamas’s efforts to sabotage peace negotiations backfired, ultimately resulting in two years of destructive conflict, weakening the organization and reigniting opportunities for regional diplomacy.
“Their attempt resulted in a devastating two-year war with horrific destruction, but it marked the decline of Hamas as a major player in the region. This, I believe, paves the way for the momentum those leaders discussed in that significant interview to advance,” Hume stated.
As part of Trump’s cease-fire initiative, Hamas has committed to releasing the remaining 48 hostages and relinquishing control in exchange for support aimed at Palestinian unity and widespread Arab and Islamic backing. This suggests a potential breakthrough after years of stagnant talks, although critical terms still need further negotiation.
In October 2023, Hamas executed a surprise assault on Israel, reportedly launching 5,000 rockets from Gaza before infiltrating the border and resulting in at least 200 fatalities. Following this, Prime Minister Netanyahu declared a state of war alert and convened an emergency meeting with key security personnel.
Hamas militants inflicted harm on civilians, with reports of extreme brutality. One incident involved a video of a fighter using a gardening tool against a still conscious victim. After two years of conflict, casualty figures exceeded 60,000 Palestinians and 1,983 Israelis, according to statistics from the Gaza Ministry of Health and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On Monday, Hamas released the last 20 living Israeli hostages under a peace deal mediated by Trump aimed at concluding the Israel-Hamas conflict. The released individuals were seen reuniting with their families, leading to emotional moments widely shared on social media.
