82-Year-Old Woman Arrested for Husband’s Death in Nursing Home Shooting

Authorities in South Carolina are investigating an incident involving an 82-year-old woman accused of fatally shooting her husband in a nursing home. It appears that this act was premeditated, according to police and various news sources.

Harriet Kaye Recker was taken into custody on September 12, the day following the death of her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, at the Preston Health Center. She was later admitted to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office for treatment.

In court proceedings, it was revealed that a neighbor who drove Harriet to the facility that morning showed them a room and then left to fetch an extra chair.

Upon returning to the room, the neighbors heard a loud bang and rushed back to find Harriet holding a revolver and Dennis suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Witnesses reported that Dennis’s last words were, “She shot me.”

Sadly, despite immediate medical assistance, he did not survive.

Deputies later found a note in Harriet’s wallet, which matched one discovered in financial documents at her home. The note expressed overwhelming feelings: “Guys, this is too much for me. I wish I could do this with my wonderful family and lots of good friends.”

Additional notes and financial records led investigators to believe the shooting was planned in advance.

Harriet has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime, as per court documents. She was booked into the Beaufort County Jail the same day.

Following a court hearing, a judge determined that there was probable cause to proceed with the case, which is now headed to a grand jury. Harriet remains in custody without bail.

Interestingly, a local pest control operator who worked for the Recker family described Harriet as kind and helpful. He recalled her as “always loving” and the “nicest person in Sun City.”
