Government Shutdown Enters Second Week

As the government moves into its second week of shutdown, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer from Minnesota has a pointed message directed at Democrats.

In a video obtained by Blaze News, Emmer took aim at Senate Democrats for their partisan stance during this time of crisis. Since the September 30 deadline, Congress has faced gridlock, primarily due to Democrats declining to approve a bipartisan funding bill put forth by Republicans.

“All of these Democrats are putting their own political problems ahead of the American people,” Emmer stated.

He emphasized the consequences of the shutdown, noting that Democrats in the Senate have rejected efforts to reopen the government on seven separate occasions. “More than 400,000 Minnesotans rely on SNAP for their basic needs. Air traffic controllers aren’t receiving pay. Customs and Border Protection also isn’t receiving salaries,” he added.

Interestingly, the Trump administration has been making efforts to alleviate the impact of the shutdown on those affected, particularly ensuring that military personnel won’t miss their paychecks due by October 15.

In the video, Emmer is seen at the U.S. Capitol, speaking near the Senate chamber, which is currently stalled in reopening discussions. He pointed out significant differences between the spending proposals of the two parties.

“I’m standing in the Rotunda, and behind me is where the Senate should be right now, voting to reopen the government. Instead, they’ve voted against it seven times,” he remarked.

The Republican-backed spending bill aims to maintain government funding at existing levels until November 21 and does not contain any ideological supplements. In contrast, the Democratic alternative is criticized for being laden with such items. Emmer specifically called out Democratic Senator Tina Smith for voting against measures intended to keep the government functioning.

He expressed concern over proposals that could redirect taxpayer-funded health benefits while cutting funding for rural hospitals that were established earlier in the summer.

Emmer concluded with urgency in his message: “All Democrats are putting their own political issues ahead of the American public. This is inexcusable and unjust.” He called for collaboration, urging Democrats to prioritize the needs of the American people and to resume their legislative responsibilities.
