On Course to Allocate $500 Million More for Healthcare Program Covering Undocumented Individuals than for State Police

Oregon, under Democratic leadership, plans to allocate $500 million more than its state police budget for programs that include providing free healthcare to undocumented immigrants.

The budget for the Healthier Oregon Program (HOP) stands at $1.3 billion, reflecting a significant increase of 1,100% since its launch in 2022. In comparison, the Oregon State Police budget is slightly over $717 million.

The Oregon Health Authority notes, “Starting July 1, 2023, immigration or citizenship status will no longer impact OHP eligibility.”

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, criticized the state’s budgeting choices, calling them biased and outrageous.

“It’s ridiculous. Oregon will be spending $500 million more on free healthcare for immigrants irrespective of their legal status than on state police during this budget period,” McLaughlin expressed in a post on X.

She further stated that “Oregon will invest $1.5 billion from 2025 to 2027 in health programs benefiting illegal aliens, while only budgeting $717 million for the Oregon State Police.”

Oregon is among the Democratic states that have fully embraced a free healthcare system for undocumented immigrants during the Biden presidency. However, three other similarly liberal states have recently begun to retract those commitments, labeling the programs as financial burdens.

California, Illinois, and Minnesota have all launched extensive health benefits for undocumented immigrants in the last four years, but they’ve each reduced their initiatives as costs have surged well beyond initial estimates.

As recently reported, California spends around $8.5 billion annually for free medical services for undocumented immigrants, leading to citizens facing longer wait times and difficulty accessing healthcare. In response, Governor Gavin Newsom has started cutting back on these programs to tackle the issues they’ve created.

Minnesota is also scaling back its Minnesota Cares initiative, with shortfalls necessitating significant cuts by Governor Tim Walz.

Similarly, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has announced reductions to the state’s free benefits for immigrants after the healthcare program went over budget shortly after its 2020 implementation. While Congress has increased funding yearly, this year, cuts were made due to a state budget deficit of $3.2 billion.

So far, unlike other blue states, Oregon appears to be overlooking the unsustainability of its extensive financial commitments to undocumented immigrants.
