Wichita Police Respond to Possible Kidnapping Incident
A woman who appeared to be abducted in surveillance footage outside a Wichita home on Sunday has reached out to the police for help, authorities confirmed.
According to the Wichita police, they received a call around 3 p.m. from the woman who identified herself as the individual seen in the video. Officers quickly located her and took her to City Hall for further questioning.
The woman, a 35-year-old local resident, was featured in the video filmed early Sunday morning in the 1400 block of North Volusia. The footage shows her yelling for help as a man drags her away.
“At this stage, we suspect this incident is related to domestic violence, with the woman being victimized by her boyfriend,” the police noted. Thankfully, she did not suffer any serious injuries.
Detectives are still working on the case, which will eventually be handed over to the appropriate attorney’s office for prosecution consideration. The police department expressed appreciation for the community’s assistance in sharing the videos, which gained a significant amount of attention online.
The police reassured the public that they do not believe there is any ongoing threat. They reiterated, “There is no current risk to public safety.” A 20-second doorbell video captured around 2 a.m. on Sunday depicted the woman resisting as she was pulled out of view by a man.
Authorities sought the public’s help in identifying those involved, leading to several tips. Investigators noted the scene for any potential witnesses and examined license plate data, as well as checking recent disturbances or missing person reports before the woman came forward.
Lt. Aaron Moses from the Wichita Police had earlier told media that the video provided a crucial starting point for them to ensure the woman’s safety, emphasizing, “This is really the only evidence we have at this point.”
Moses clarified that they found no indication of organized crime involvement, stating, “We don’t have enough information to suggest this is cartel-related or part of a larger trend.” When questioned about the possibility of the incident being a prank, he insisted that they treat it as genuine until proven otherwise. “We have to operate under the assumption that this is a real incident until we confirm otherwise.”
The department has reviewed all missing person reports filed since the beginning of October and believes this situation is likely singular, not posing a broader risk.
Moreover, concerns arose over the spread of misinformation online, as enhanced videos circulated, showcasing altered details and misleading information. Moses warned against this, suggesting that it could complicate the investigation. He urged the public to rely solely on content from the Wichita Police Department for accurate updates.
Detectives continue to gather evidence and interview individuals connected to the case, which will soon be submitted for legal review.
The police expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement, stating, “Our priority is transparency and ensuring everyone’s safety.”
