Forensic Tests Dispute Hostage Identity in Hamas Body Transfer

Israeli officials announced on Wednesday that forensic examinations revealed that one of the bodies recently transferred from Hamas does not belong to any of the hostages who were taken. This situation adds more tension to the fragile ceasefire established last week by President Trump, during which Hamas promised to return the bodies of 28 hostages captured in the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023.

Since Monday, Hamas has returned eight bodies, coinciding with the deadline for delivering all living and deceased hostages. All 20 surviving prisoners have been sent back to their homes.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that tests conducted at the National Forensic Laboratory confirmed that one of the four bodies received from Hamas that day did not correspond with any of the identified hostages.

“The Israeli government and organizations supporting the families of the missing and prisoners of war are committed and relentless in their efforts to ensure that all deceased hostages are returned for proper burial in Israel,” read a statement from the Israeli prime minister’s office.

They further emphasized, “According to the terms of the agreement, Hamas must adhere to its commitments to the mediators and hand back the remains. We will not compromise and will do everything to recover every fallen hostage.” They ended with a poignant reminder: “May their memory be a blessing.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross is facilitating the transfer of bodies between Hamas and Israel. Reports suggest that Hamas requested additional time to locate and hand over the bodies as agreed in the ceasefire arrangement.

Earlier this year, Hamas delivered a body it claimed was that of a murdered hostage, Siri Bibas, but it was later identified as belonging to a Palestinian woman. The actual remains of Mr. Bibas were eventually returned to Israel.

Hamas has indicated to intermediaries that four more bodies of deceased hostages would be transferred on Wednesday, according to reports.

In response to Hamas’ delays in delivering bodies, Israel announced a reduction in humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. However, it remains unclear if this threat has been put into action.
