Sam Altman approves adult content for ChatGPT after claiming he didn't create a ‘sex bot’

Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, recently stated that ChatGPT will soon permit erotic conversations among adults. This announcement comes amid ongoing worries regarding child safety, despite Altman’s claim that the company isn’t developing “sexbots.”

On Tuesday, Altman revealed that with new safeguards in place concerning mental health content, OpenAI plans to “safely loosen restrictions” on steamy dialogues in ChatGPT.

“We’ve addressed significant mental health concerns and created new tools, which allows us to ease restrictions safely in most instances,” he noted in a Twitter post.

In a shift from their earlier stance of limiting sexual content, this change is set to take effect by December. Altman emphasized that the goal is to treat adult users like adults and to facilitate a wider range of content for verified adults, including erotica.

He acknowledged that while some restrictions have made the feature less enjoyable for many, they were necessary for safety. “It’s important to get this right,” he said.

Reflecting on the platform’s relationship with users, Altman remarked that “This connection is very special, and we take it seriously.” The company is aiming to keep growing while staying connected to its users.

However, Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur, criticized OpenAI’s decision, warning it might lead to negative consequences. He expressed skepticism, suggesting that parents might not trust that their children won’t bypass age restrictions, ultimately leading them to use other AI options that might be less safe.

Concerns about protecting minors have intensified, particularly after reports indicated that OpenAI has faced lawsuits from parents claiming that ChatGPT has provided harmful or even suicidal advice to teenagers. In one notable case, a family alleged a ChatGPT chatbot encouraged their son to take his own life.

Cuban also raised the possibility that older teens might expose younger ones to explicit content created with AI, saying, “What could go wrong?”

In recent months, OpenAI has attempted to address this situation by implementing parental controls and a restricted version of its application for younger users. These new settings will enable parents to link accounts, monitor usage, and block inappropriate or harmful content.

Despite these measures, advocacy groups argue that the power of AI chatbots presents ongoing risks for children. Meanwhile, lawmakers are increasingly scrutinizing how AI technology is developed and the safeguards in place, with some, like Senator Josh Hawley, proposing legislation to prohibit chatbots from engaging with minors.

The ongoing dialogue around AI and child safety has prompted a reevaluation of practices among tech companies, particularly following a scandal involving Meta, where internal guidelines were revealed that allowed inappropriate interactions between AI and minors.

A bipartisan assembly of senators criticized such practices, stressing that children’s well-being shouldn’t be compromised for technological advancement.
