Jerry Jones Supports Defensive Coordinator

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has come to the defense of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, even though the team’s defense ranks among the worst in the league this season.

“He has a solid background,” Jones remarked, as reported by local media. “He’s faced challenges and has had considerable success throughout his career, not just with us but also in Chicago and Indianapolis. It’s true, he’s taken some hits this season. But he’s the person I want beside me in tough times, because you’re never guaranteed all the answers. When I had the chance to bring him on board, I jumped at it and still stand by that decision.”

Jones also mentioned that the challenges faced aren’t limited to one specific area, suggesting, “It’s not just one or two significant problems here.” He believes that Eberflus can tackle and fix the smaller issues, especially with 11 games still left to play.

This statement should put to rest any speculation about firing Eberflus soon, despite the defense’s poor showing so far.

Hired in the offseason by new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Eberflus was previously let go as the head coach of the Bears after the last season. He had served as the Cowboys’ linebackers coach from 2011 to 2017 before moving on to become the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis.

The Cowboys currently sit near the bottom of the league in defensive DVOA, third-to-last in yards allowed per play (6.2), and second-to-last in points allowed per game (30.7).

Jones’ defense of Eberflus might stem from what’s been a chaotic offseason for the coach, particularly surrounding a contract dispute with star pass rusher Micah Parsons.

After talks fell through with Jones, Parsons was traded to the Packers in exchange for valuable draft picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

The Cowboys’ record stands at 2-3-1, and the upcoming weeks will present a tough challenge as they face the Commanders and Broncos in the next two games.
