How Joe Buck changed the 'smug a--hole' impression on his first date with his wife

Joe Buck Reflects on His Relationship with Michelle Beisner

Joe Buck, ESPN’s leading NFL play-by-play announcer, recently shared an interesting tidbit about his current wife, Michelle Beisnerbach. It turns out she initially thought he came off as “smug” before their first encounter.

During his appearance on the podcast “The Pivot,” Buck revealed how he was introduced to Beisner, a features reporter, by their mutual friend Rich Eisen. However, she was hesitant about dating him at first.

“She saw me in a national car rental ad and thought I looked like a smug bastard,” Buck, 56, said, admitting he felt the same way. “When I spotted her at NFL Network, I felt this impulse like, ‘I’m going to pursue that one,’ and I did.”

Eisen kind of played the role of matchmaker, but Buck noted that their initial connection was a bit rocky. When Eisen tried to facilitate a connection, Beisner expressed skepticism about the idea of dating Buck.

They had their first dinner in St. Louis, but circumstances weren’t exactly ideal, as Beisner was covering a Rams game. Buck recounted, “She insisted we take separate cars to dinner, just in case I was a ‘psychopath’ or something. I mean, her plan was sensible.” He added, “But I really wanted to pick her up.”

“Honestly, I knew I was going to marry her even before we had appetizers. There was something unique about her—it was probably the most significant decision of my adult life,” Buck reflected.

In a light-hearted moment, he joked about proposing during a live audio segment, noting the couple now has twin sons, Wyatt and Blake, who are 7 years old. “I’ve exhausted her, but I wasn’t about to give up,” he said with a laugh.

Beisner later shared a clip of the podcast moment on Instagram, where Eisen chimed in, confirming Buck’s sentiments.

Reflecting on their long marriage, Beisner commented that it felt like they were approaching marriage for the first time— despite being married for 19 years. “This is definitely the last time I’d want to do it, but I’m also grateful we did,” she added.

Buck and Beisner were together for a year before tying the knot in 2014, welcoming their twin boys in 2018. Buck also has two daughters from a previous marriage, which ended in 2011.
