Davis Webb Transitioning from Player to Coach

Just forty-six days after tossing the only touchdown pass of his NFL career, Davis Webb found himself coaching none other than Russell Wilson, a future Hall of Famer.

Webb, seen as a potential rising star in coaching, made a swift transition from playing with the Giants to taking on a role as the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach. His previous experience includes mentoring 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year finalist, Bo Nix, during the last season.

The Giants are set to play against Webb, who was drafted by them in the third round of 2017. He previously gained valuable insights while working under Brian Daboll during their time with the Bills and was serving as a backup with the Giants again in 2022.

Interestingly, Wilson will be on the Giants’ sideline for the game.

Reflecting on Webb’s coaching style, Wilson shared, “I thought Davis was great.” He went on to emphasize Webb’s intelligence, enthusiasm, and preparation for coaching. “You can sense his mentality and how he understands the game,” he noted, emphasizing that Webb has always had a coaching essence, even while playing.

The Broncos declined a request for Webb to discuss his experiences with the Giants and the lessons learned from Daboll and Sean Payton. However, Webb recently had the opportunity to call plays during a preseason game, which was recognized as a reward from Payton.

In a noteworthy moment during the 2022 season, Daboll put Webb on the field for the final game after the Giants secured a playoff spot. He managed to throw a touchdown pass to Kenny Golladay, marking Webb’s only score in the last two seasons.

Daboll praised Webb as “incredibly smart,” noting his ability to change perspectives on the game and contributing valuable insights. He expressed pride in Webb’s coaching progress, especially with Bo Nix, calling him one of his favorite players to coach.

According to SI.com, Webb, now 30, is seen as a possible candidate for the Titans’ head coaching position. Wilson chimed in with confidence in Webb’s abilities, suggesting, “I think he’ll be a great coach for a long time. He has what it takes to become an offensive coordinator and maybe even a head coach, if all goes well.”

Giants Update

The Giants have activated OLB Victor Dimukeje from the physically unable to perform list. He hasn’t practiced since injuring his pectoral muscle during the offseason.

However, several players, including WR Darius Slayton (hamstring) and C John Michael Schmitz (concussion), did not participate in Wednesday’s practice session. Slayton commented, “I feel good. I’m making progress each day.”

In other news, RB Cam Scatterbo was recognized as one of the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week, alongside the Panthers’ Rico Doodle. As a result, a donation of $2,000 was made to the New York City Food Bank in his name.
