Officials confirm the identities of 14 victims from a tragic Tennessee explosion

On Wednesday, officials announced that they had identified 14 of the 16 individuals who lost their lives in a large explosion at an explosives factory in Tennessee last week. The process of disarming potentially dangerous materials at the site may continue, and it could take weeks to determine what triggered the blast.

During a press briefing, Sheriff Chris Davis of Humphreys County confirmed that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation had successfully identified 14 victims from the explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems. Authorities are utilizing a rapid DNA technology that allows them to form a DNA profile within a couple of hours by comparing family samples with the remains found.

The victims ranged in age from 25 to 60, and Davis noted that the confirmation offers many families a crucial step toward closure.

Davis mentioned the uncertainty regarding how long it would take to clear the scene and gather evidence. “I wouldn’t be shocked if this takes me two months to return,” he remarked, emphasizing the vast and delicate nature of the site.

Jamie VanVleet, an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, stated that there’s still a lot of work to do at the extensive location.

Accurate Energetic Systems specializes in the supply and research of explosives for military applications, employing around 150 staff members, according to state information.

The factory complex spans 1,300 acres in a wooded region of middle Tennessee, featuring eight distinct production facilities and a laboratory. The unincorporated area of Bucksnort lies around 60 miles southwest of Nashville, bordering both Hickman and Humphreys counties.

The explosion was so powerful that it was felt over 20 miles away, leaving behind twisted metal and charred remnants of vehicles.

Authorities confirmed there were no survivors, and some debris may be dispersed over a large area. VanVleet stated that while they were able to extract some hazardous items from the scene, more dangers might emerge as they proceed with the investigation.

“We’re also focused on carefully and respectfully retrieving the victims,” he added.

There hasn’t been any detailed information released about the materials involved in the explosion, as this remains part of the ongoing investigation. Davis mentioned it’s still too early to make any assumptions about where the incident originated.

Public records indicate that the company holds multiple military contracts, largely with the U.S. Army and Navy, providing everything from basic explosives to landmines and small-scale demolition devices like C4.
