Jonathan Rinderknecht faces two additional charges in the Palisades Fire case

The 29-year-old man charged with igniting the disastrous Palisades Fire was indicted this week on additional counts following a federal grand jury hearing, the Justice Department has announced.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, hailing from Melbourne, Florida, faces new charges of arson impacting interstate commerce and wood arson, alongside existing charges of arson causing property damage. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California stated that he could face a prison sentence of up to 45 years if found guilty.

According to the prosecutor’s office, “A federal grand jury has added two felony charges against a former resident of the Pacific Palisades area, linked to the beginning of the Palisades Fire in January 2025, which stands as one of the most catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles history.”

Reports indicate that the Palisades Fire is considered a ‘residual’ fire, essentially an offshoot of the Luckman Fire that started early on New Year’s Day 2025, as cited in court documents.

Using various forms of evidence, including witness accounts and cell phone data, authorities concluded that Rinderknecht intentionally ignited the Luckman Fire shortly after midnight on federal land managed by the Mountain Recreation and Conservation Authority.

It’s alleged that while working as an Uber driver on December 31, 2024, passengers described Rinderknecht as appearing “agitated and angry” during their rides that night.

After leaving a passenger in Pacific Palisades, Rinderknecht parked near the Skull Rock Trailhead, attempted to contact a friend, and recorded a video while listening to a rap song. This particular song’s music video visually featured an object being set ablaze, as mentioned by the prosecutor’s office.

Shortly after midnight, the environmental sensing platform recorded the emergence of the Luckman Fire. During a police interview on January 24, 2025, Rinderknecht reportedly misled officers about his initial location when he saw the fire, claiming he was near a hiking trail’s base, while geolocation data indicated he was much closer to the rapidly spreading flames.

Rinderknecht was arrested on October 7, 2025, and is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles soon.
