Sen. Tim Kaine on Trump’s Impact on Federal Employees
During a recent appearance on MSNBC’s “The Ana Cabrera Report,” Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) discussed President Donald Trump’s tactics and their effects on the Democratic Party. Kaine suggested that Trump’s threats to lay off federal employees are actually galvanizing Democrats’ commitment. He remarked, “The president has been targeting federal employees since his first day in office, which negatively affects our economic projects and development. If your goal is to create pressure for a resolution, that’s how you do it.” He emphasized the need to confront bullying, stating Virginians have repeatedly insisted that it must end.
Host Eliel Reshef probed further, highlighting that Trump is threatening to make some furloughs permanent, implying that Republicans are hesitant to act without his approval. Reshef questioned whether there would come a time when Kaine’s party would feel the need to negotiate to prevent further losses.
Kaine responded by indicating that Trump’s methods only strengthen their determination. He asserted that any future government reopening should mean no layoffs, no cancellations of economic development projects, and no cuts to public health funding in Virginia. From the start, he claimed, the president has inflicted harm on federal workers and local development, suggesting that Trump’s threats are real and not to be dismissed. Kaine urged that instead of continuing this cycle of pressure, the focus should shift to resolving the healthcare issues exacerbated by recent legislation.
“By putting pressure on us, he’s actually encouraging us to stand firm,” Kaine added. “In Virginia, we have the second-highest number of federal employees in the country, only behind California, and I see this firsthand when I travel across the state. My team has consistently reported that the bullying must end—and it’s clear that action is necessary to make that happen.”
