US Army General Uses AI for Decision-Making

A senior U.S. Army general based in South Korea has recently begun utilizing artificial intelligence chatbots to assist with important orders and personal decision-making. This development indicates that even high-ranking officials at the Pentagon are increasingly exploring generative AI tools.

Maj. Gen. William “Hank” Taylor, who leads the Eighth Army, shared insights with reporters at the Association of the United States Army Conference in Washington, D.C. He mentioned that he employs ChatGPT for refining decisions that impact thousands of military personnel.

“Chat and I have grown quite close lately,” Taylor remarked during a media roundtable on Monday, though he opted not to share specific examples from his experiences.

His reflections on ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, highlight a desire to build a model to facilitate better decision-making, as reported by various outlets.

Taylor explained that his focus is on how AI can assist with everyday leadership tasks, rather than combat-related situations.

“As a commander, I aim to enhance my decision-making capabilities,” he stated. “It’s important to make timely decisions that give me an edge.”

Additionally, Taylor, who also acts as chief of staff for United Nations Command in Korea, views this technology as a promising tool for developing analytical models and training personnel to think more critically.

This acknowledgment from Taylor represents one of the clearest admissions by a senior military figure in the U.S. regarding the application of commercial chatbots in leadership and operational thought processes.

The military’s ongoing efforts to integrate artificial intelligence span various operational areas, including logistics and surveillance, as nations like China and Russia pursue similar advancements.

Officials believe AI systems could lead to faster data processing and improved targeting precision. However, there are significant concerns about the reliability and accountability of software in roles typically managed by humans.

As the Pentagon notes, future conflicts could unfold at “machine speed,” necessitating rapid decision-making beyond the capacity of human judgment. Former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall highlighted that those who fail to adapt may struggle to survive in modern battlefields.

AI has already been utilized in combat simulations, with initiatives by the Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency testing its capabilities. For instance, modified algorithms have been used to pilot F-16 jets during simulated air battles.

There are also programs in place to analyze satellite data, manage logistics, and streamline documentation for field operations. The Army’s special operations forces have similarly embraced these technologies to alleviate what they identify as “cognitive burden” on operators, employing AI for report generation and intelligence processing.

Despite these advancements, Pentagon officials are approaching this technology with caution, recognizing the potential risks of disinformation and data inaccuracies that could arise from generative AI systems.

Taylor acknowledged that one of the key challenges in adopting cutting-edge technology involves keeping pace with the rapid evolution of AI tools, while ensuring compliance with rigorous military security protocols.

ChatGPT has garnered global attention as various governments and businesses strive to understand its capabilities and limitations. While newer versions of the program can perform complex analyses, they are also known to carry risks of errors and inaccuracies.
