Vandalism at Playland Amusement Park
Police are not amused by recent events.
Three brothers allegedly vandalized Playland, a historic amusement park in Westchester County, on the night of September 23, making off with around 200 stuffed animals. The incident unfolded when they arrived by boat, landed on the beach just before midnight, and climbed a fence to enter the park, causing extensive damage before leaving early the following morning.
Surveillance footage captured them ransacking the 280-acre park, which has been a local attraction for years. Westchester County Police confirmed the details in a statement.
County Executive Ken Jenkins expressed his outrage, saying, “This incident is both infuriating and heartbreaking. It’s one thing to be young; it’s another to be destructive.” He went on to criticize the senselessness of their actions and articulated his disappointment over the vandalism at the community landmark.
The trio, which included a drug user who reportedly walked barefoot through one of the park’s attractions, broke into an electrical room, tampered with fiber optic cables, and stuffed numerous stolen stuffed animals into trash bags.
One of the suspects even attempted to throw a photo booth off the boardwalk but failed to get it over the railing.
“This is a betrayal of the respect and pride we expect from our community members,” Jenkins continued. He reassured the public that law enforcement is working diligently to identify those responsible and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
Authorities are urging anyone who can recognize the suspects to contact the General Investigations Division at 914-864-7916 or 1-800-898-TIPS.
This recent vandalism mirrors a similar incident from June, where the historic Tarrytown Lighthouse was severely damaged, costing over $100,000 in repairs. In that case, three unidentified teens were arrested for breaking in, stealing items, and setting parts of the landmark ablaze.
