Teen shot and killed a 15-year-old boy and a mother of eight after being denied entry to a soccer game, according to police.

A tragic incident unfolded when an 18-year-old, Rafael Martinez Lopez, reportedly shot and killed a 15-year-old boy and the boy’s mother during a disagreement over a soccer game at an elementary school in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The victims were identified as Jeremiah Griffin Cuevas and his mother, Savana Villarreal, 39. According to police, Villarreal intervened in an attempt to help her son, ultimately sacrificing her life.

“She gave her life to save her son,” said Jeremiah’s mother, Mildred Griffin, while expressing her grief.

Authorities quickly arrested Martinez-Lopez after he fled from the scene, which was witnessed by at least eight children who were playing nearby.

Grand Rapids Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg explained that the suspect had approached a group of children and asked them to join in a soccer game. However, when he was declined, tensions escalated into a verbal argument, leading to the shooting.

Jeremiah died on the spot, while his mother later passed away at a hospital, after initially trying to manage the situation. Fortunately, no other children were hurt, but they were understandably traumatized by the incident.

Villarreal had been overseeing the match due to previous disturbances in the area. Her sister, Angelita Tierra Blanca, highlighted Villarreal’s caring nature and her commitment to the community.

Mildred Griffin emphasized the close bond between her son and Villarreal, noting that Jeremiah considered her family, referring to her as his aunt and caregiver.

Villarreal was known for her active role in local charities, aiding families by distributing essential goods.

Friends of the family shared moving sentiments, with one stating that Villarreal protected Jeremiah in his last moments, fulfilling her role as a guardian.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. on the soccer field at Southwest Elementary School. In the wake of the tragic event, classes at the school have been canceled until Friday as investigations continue.

Martinez-Lopez now faces multiple charges, including two counts of open murder and several firearm-related charges.
