Vance's team claims California Governor Gavin Newsom is promoting false information

Vance and Newsom Clash Ahead of Marine Corps Celebration

Vice President J.D. Vance, a Marine veteran, is set to attend the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary celebration in California this Saturday. However, his communication team has accused California Governor Gavin Newsom of sharing “fake news” related to the event.

Newsom released a statement suggesting that “Donald Trump and J.D. Vance believe shutting down I-5 to launch missiles from ships is how to honor the military. Perhaps it would be better to prioritize our troops instead,” which did not sit well with Vance’s team. The governor referenced a retweet from a progressive media outlet alleging that a section of I-5 would be closed for the Vice President’s visit, leading to unrest and unpaid troops.

William Martin, a special assistant in the Vice President’s office, dismissed these claims as completely false. He clarified that “the Marines are not shutting down Interstate 5. The event at Camp Pendleton is, in fact, a training exercise, and the troops are being paid—contrary to claims by Chuck Schumer.” Martin emphasized that official statements from the Marines confirmed that public transportation remains unaffected.

In response to the accusations, Vance’s press secretary, Taylor Van Kirk, alleged that Newsom was “deliberately spreading misinformation” to incite fear among Californians while attempting to gain cheap political leverage. She expressed Vance’s enthusiasm for celebrating with the Marines, underscoring that their paychecks are secure due to Trump’s efforts, despite a government shutdown.

Newsom’s office later stated, “We’re relieved that the White House has backed off from closing major highways. I-5 will stay open, and we hope the Trump Administration exhibits the same good sense in reopening the federal government.”

Among those expected at Saturday’s event are Army Secretary Pete Hegseth, Navy Secretary John Phelan, and Marine Corps Commander Eric Smith.
