NBA Debut for Egor Demin in Toronto

TORONTO — Egor Demin, the Brooklyn Nets’ first lottery pick in 15 years, is set to make his NBA debut on Friday against the Toronto Raptors.

The 19-year-old, selected No. 8 overall, has been recovering from a torn plantar fascia injury he sustained in July during the Las Vegas Summer League. This preseason contest marks his first appearance after being sidelined.

Nets coach Jordi Fernandez expressed optimism, stating, “He’s been following the program we set for him and has shown good progress. He’s been participating in five-on-five drills, so he’s ready to take the floor. It’s exciting—he deserves a few minutes out there.” Fernandez emphasized the importance of having fun for Demin during this initial outing.

At 6-foot-9, the point guard from BYU is the league’s 11th youngest player and is the first Nets lottery pick since Derrick Favors in 2010. Despite missing the first three preseason games, he was cleared for full-contact practice while the team was in Macau.

Fernandez, however, wants to manage expectations. “There’s not too much pressure on him,” he noted. The focus, he said, should be on enjoyment rather than expectations during his debut.

As for the team dynamics, the Nets made a record five first-round picks this year, including two point guards, Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf. Their performances have raised questions about how the rookie trio will share playing time and adjust together.

“I don’t have a crystal ball to predict how they’ll blend,” Fernandez admitted, adding that competition for minutes will be intense among them. He looks forward to seeing their development in actual games.

“The competition has just begun,” he remarked, hinting at the future prospects of the young talents within the squad.
